Its time for Technology? |
28-06-2010,
: FIFA argued against using technologies widely embraced by other sports for years.
But, post 27th June pre-quarter finals of the World Cup, FIFA might introduce technology for reviews since "human fators" are increasingly becoming costly to the spirit of the game. Germany and Argentina benefited from the "human factors", while for teams like Italy, USA, England and Mexico it became costly.
The world watched a goal this afternoon in Bloemfontein - from England's Frank Lampard except for the decision makers - the referee Jorge Larrionda and his assistant - and it costed england the goal!
In the evening, Mexico was sunk by a clearly offside goal scored by Argentina’s Carlos Tevez, and despite a discussion between referee Roberto Rosetti and his assistant Paolo Calcagno, that goal was allowed to stand.
Replays rapidly showed how wrong these calls were.
Because it is against one of the cardinal rules of the world game, football is not using technology. Perhaps it is time to use the same.
FIFA has fought against introduction of technology and using goal-line technology, going so far as to spin out experiments like five-man officiating team or the microchipped balls.
The truth is that until this World Cup there was no real will from FIFA to make changes that would level the playing field. FIFA’s president, Sepp Blatter, has claimed that this is part of the charm of the game.
But, Mr. Blatter It’s about time!
